Rosa Parks, famous for her civil rights activism, worked in a shirt factory and then as a seamstress in a department store in Montgomery, Alabama. She refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus, and thus started a national push toward ending segregation practices.
Born in 1913, Parks grew up going to school in segregated public schools. However, when she reached 11th grade in 1929, she dropped out to care for her sick mother and grandmother. She had also been undergoing teacher's training at the Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes. She earned her high school degree four years later in 1933.
