The distance of drug-free zones varies from state to state. These zones are designed to keep drug dealers from dealing drugs to children. Drug-free zones may not be limited to schools though and can often include other places children frequent, such as parks.
Checking penal codes is one way to determine the distance from a school or public place required for a drug-free zone. Though the sale or use of drugs in many drug-free zones results in harsher penalties, the use of drug-free zones reportedly has not had the effect lawmakers anticipated. The use of drug-free zones has not resulted in a reduction in the use of drugs near children or the sale of drugs to children.
