The Dolomite Mountains are located in northern Italy in Belluno, South Tyrol and Trentino. The mountains have 18 peaks which form part of the Italian Alps. The Dolomites have an average height of approximately 9842 feet and cover about 547 miles, with Marmolada its highest peak at 10,968 feet.
The Dolomite Mountains are made of primarily sedimentary rocks, such as dolomite, and volcanic rocks. The mountain range has sheer cliffs and vertical walls that surround narrow, long valleys. Major peaks include Antelao, Tofana di Mezzo, Cimon della Pala and Monte Pelmo. Some of the Dolomites' major passes and footpaths are Ombretta Pass, Grasleiten Pass and Rosetta Pass.
