Does eating ice cream cause weight gain?

All high-fat desserts such as ice cream can cause weight gain, particularly when eaten in excess. While an occasional dish of ice cream may be an acceptable treat, more frequent indulgence can contribute to weight gain.
Taking in more calories than expended results in weight gain. Active people can eat more without gaining weight because they burn off more calories through exercise. Foods like ice cream, while tasty, are mostly empty calories. While there is protein and calcium in ice cream, eating a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats provides ample amounts of these nutrients, without all the calories from fat and sugar that ice cream has.
