According to a study done by the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine as reported by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda, can lead to weight gain. As Today.com explains, the end result of consuming Splenda is that the body begins to crave sugar.
When Splenda is consumed, the body treats it as if it were glucose. It releases insulin and prepares to store fat and sugar. However, since the body has no sugar to store, a stress response is triggered. According to Today.com, this response causes people to crave sweets and eat more of them than they normally would, leading to weight gain.
