Nicknamed the "Land of the Sky," the city of Asheville, N.C., has an average elevation of 2,134 feet above sea level. Just 20 miles northwest of Asheville is Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River, at 6,684 feet above sea level.
Asheville is the largest city in western North Carolina and the 11th-largest city in the entire state, with a population of 83,393 as of the 2010 census. The city is home to the United States National Climatic Data Center, the largest active archive of weather data, and the Biltmore Estate, the largest private residence in North America.
