Why do gift cards say registration required?

Some gift card suppliers require the account number assigned to a specific card to be activated before use. This prevents thieves from paying with stolen gift cards. Card activation is often required when using a gift card issued by a bank or credit card company, such as Visa or Discover.

There are two ways to activate a gift card. Most gift cards can be activated by visiting the supplier's website and entering the card's account number and activation code. Customers can also call the supplier directly and provide them with the account number and activation code printed on the card.
