Which state had the first modern state police agency?

Pennsylvania established the first modern state police department in 1905. State police departments were originally created to combat the corruption that was common in regional and municipal police departments.

The Pennsylvania State Police Department (PSPD) was the first uniformed police organisation of its kind. Created by an act of legislation signed by Governor Samuel W. Pennypacke, the success of the PSPD served as a model for states such as Massachusetts and Texas, which soon created similar police forces. The department currently consists of more than 4,600 sworn officers and a civilian support staff with jurisdiction in all political subdivisions in the commonwealth.
