Todd Portune and Ed Fitzgerald were the Ohio democratic gubernatorial candidates in 2014. Fitzgerald won the democratic party nomination and went on to lose to republican incumbent John Kasich in the general election.
The state of Ohio is considered to be a swing state, being neither concisely republican nor democrat. The Ohio governor is elected by a plurality every four years, occurring in even years when there is not a presidential election. In Ohio's history of gubernatorial elections the state has had a near equal number of republican and democratic governors. As of 2015, the next Ohio gubernatorial election is set for Nov. 6, 2018.
