The length of a term for a governor depends upon the state. As of 2014, 48 states all have a gubernatorial term lasting for 4 years. This means that every 4 years the state holds a gubernatorial election. Two states, however, still have a term limit of only 2 years. Vermont has had its 2-year term limit since 1870 and New Hampshire has had its since 1878.
