Incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo won the New York governors' race in 2014, beating out candidate Rob Astorino. This win elected Governor Cuomo to his second term as New York Governor, and he received over 50 percent of the vote. Other challengers included Howie Hawkins, Michael McDermott and Stephen Cohn.

Governor Cuomo failed to gain the endorsement of the "New York Times" newspaper, because the newspaper said that Cuomo failed to make good on his promise to bring ethics reform to the New York state legislature. During the primary, the governor faced a tough opponent in Democratic challenger Zephyr Teachout, who earned 35 percent of the primary vote.
