Where are the Grand Banks located?

The Grand Banks are located southeast of Newfoundland, Canada, on the North American continental shelf of the Atlantic Ocean. The Grand Banks extend for 420 miles east to west and 350 miles north to south.

The Grand Banks are celebrated as premium fishing grounds, beloved by fisherman for the abundance of haddock, herring, cod, mackerel and flatfish found within their waters. Overfishing in the area has long been a big concern of environmentalists.

Notably, the sinking of the RMS Titanic was within close proximity to the Grand Banks. Many Titanic shipwreck expeditions are launched from the area, since the wreckage lies to the southeast.
