What is a great vine?

According to Europe for Visitors, the Great Vine is the world's largest and oldest vine. As of 2013, the vine is about 230 years old and is located in the Hampton Court Palace Gardens of Greater London.

It is believed that the Great Vine was planted in 1768 by Lancelot Brown after it was cut from another plant at Valentine's Park in Essex. The plant from which it was cut is no longer alive.

The vine was shown off to the public for the first time during the 1840s. It was at this time that Queen Victoria opened the palace garden to the general public. The Great Vine usually blooms small, fragrant flowers in early May and produces 500 to 700 bunches of sweet, black grapes in September.
