A half dollar is a coin with a value of exactly 50 cents. There are numerous types of half dollars in existence, with the most common featuring President John F. Kennedy on the front.
Half dollars were first minted in 1794 as part of the standard set of currency and featured various symbolism to represent the beliefs of the United States. In 1948, the design was changed to feature Benjamin Franklin and the Liberty Bell. The design was changed again in 1964 to feature Kennedy as a commemoration of his 1963 assassination. Though Kennedy half dollars are minted each year, they are not regularly released into circulation.
