Half Dome is a natural feature within Yosemite National Park; this granite outcropping gets its name from its shape, which is flat on one side and curved on the other. In addition to providing a challenging opportunity for rock climbers and hikers, Half Dome is also an iconic sight that is frequently photographed.

Ansel Adams, a famed American landscape photographer, took photographs of this landform, making it recognizable to many people who have never been to Yosemite in person. Half Dome's peak is almost 9,000 feet above sea level, and the summit of Half Dome was first reached in 1875. Hikers and climbers must have the proper permits to conduct their activities on this delicate natural feature.
