What happens to the winning car of the Daytona 500?

In 1996, NASCAR started a tradition of displaying the Daytona 500 winner's car on public view for the duration of a year. The car moves directly from the track to a public viewing area at the Daytona International Speedway. After a year of display, the car is returned to the winning team at the next year's Daytona 500 race.
No alterations are made to the winning car before it is put on display for public view. The car is left in its original race-winning condition, allowing viewers to get an authentic view of what a winning race car really looks like after it has been put through its paces.
