Are all high school tracks the same size?

In most cases, outdoor high school tracks are the same length. They usually measure 400 meters, or 1/4 of a mile. This allows for an easy measure of four laps that equal 1,600 meters, or 1 mile.

Standard track lanes measure 1.22 meters wide. The farther the lane is from the inside, the greater the distance. The inside lane measures 400 meters, while the outermost lane measures 453.66 meters. A standard high school track allows for competition among track and field teams from different schools. Local high school and college tracks usually allow public access as well, but schools generally prefer that users avoid the three innermost lanes.
