Several people had a hand in the invention of the personal computer. In 1971, Intel engineer Ted Hoff developed the microprocessor, which enabled huge computers to be scaled down. In 1974, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems produced a personal computer kit named the Altair.

In 1975, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems hired students Bill Gates and Paul Allen to write a programming language for Altair, which facilitated its use. The two went on to start Microsoft and sell personal computers running on their BASIC programming language. In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak used a better microprocessor to build the first Apple personal computer.
