The Indus River begins as an icy stream in the Himalaya Mountains. The source of the Indus is the Tibetan Plateau in the country of Tibet, near Mansarovar Lake, on the northern slopes of the Kailash Mountain Range.
Almost two-thirds of the Indus River flows through Pakistan, with parts of its tributaries passing through India. Other rivers join the Indus as it flows into the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi. In ancient India, the Indus was called "Sindhu" in the Sanskrit language. The river is 1,976 miles long with a total catchment basin of 450,000 square miles.
