What is an infant height and weight percentile?

An infant height and weight percentile is a measure that allows clinicians to compare infants of similar gender and age, according to the Centers for Disease Control. It is not a measure of whether the infant is overweight or underweight.

Physicians are able to use the height and weight percentile charts created by the World Health Organization to assess an infant's development through age two, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. An infant in the 67th percentile for weight weighs more than 67 out of a hundred infants. The Centers for Disease Control make adjustments to the charts, used to determine height and weight percentile, to align with international standards.
