The vernier caliper was invented by Pierre Vernier, a French scientist. Pierre invented the measuring tool in 1631, and he was born in 1580 in Ornans.
Pierre was educated by his father, a scientist. He became interested in scientific instruments, and in 1631, he invented the caliper, an instrument used for making very accurate linear measurements. The instrument was also used by Europeans to calculate direction as a compass.
Vernier worked on cartography and on surveying. He joined forces with his father in making a map of the Franche-Comté area. His involvement in surveying led to his invention of measuring instruments.
