What do jackals eat?

Jackals are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. The main diet of jackals includes reptiles, insects, birds, fruits and grass, and they also hunt small animals, including antelope.

Jackals may eat the left-over kills that are made by larger animals and have been known to scavenge off rubbish dumps to locate their next meal. These animals most often live alone or in pairs, but sometimes they can be found in small packs. Jackals are one of the few animals that find a mate and stay together for the remainder of their lives. The pair are very territorial and will mark and defend their territories, especially when they have young to protect.
