Where does a koala live?

Koalas live exclusively in Australia. They inhabit temperate, tropical and sub-tropical forests, as well as woodland and semi-arid environments where eucalyptus trees grow. Forests that contain eucalyptus trees are found along the eastern coast of Australia.

Koalas ingest large amounts of eucalyptus leaves daily, and depend upon the trees for food and shelter. It takes about 100 trees to sustain one koala. The animals rarely leave the shelter of eucalyptus trees, and attach themselves using opposing digits and sharp claws. An estimated 80% of Koala habitat has been destroyed by farming and urban development. The 20% of their remaining habitat is located mainly on privately-owned land.
