What is a labret piercing?

A labret piercing is a horizontal piercing through the skin below the lower lip. Depending on the location of the piercing and personal preference, the piercing may feature a ring, stud or curved barbell.
Although a labret piercing is most commonly centered between the lower lip and chin, it can also be offset to one side of the jaw. Two labret piercings close together are referred to as "spider bites." Another popular variation, called "snake bites," includes matching offset piercings meant to roughly resemble fangs.
Body piercing jewelry is most commonly made from surgical steel due to its low risk of causing an allergic reaction, and it may incorporate various jewels and stud shapes.
