What is the life expectancy of a groundhog?
By Forinfos - 20/03/2026 - 0 comments
The average life expectancy of a groundhog is six to eight years, but in the wild many only survive for two to three years. In captivity, groundhogs have been known to survive for 14 years.
Groundhogs are usually born in the spring in litters of four to nine kits. Groundhogs hibernate over the winter. Mature groundhogs usually weigh 12 to 15 pounds, but sometimes they get as large as 30 pounds. They dig burrows to hide in and are territorial with other groundhogs. They eat vegetation for the most part, but sometimes they eat grubs and other insects, snails and nuts.
