How long do Maine Coon cats live?

Maine Coon cats normally live 12 to 15 years. They are generally sturdy and healthy but are subject to several genetic disorders, including hip dysplasia and feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Hip dysplasia is an abnormality of the hip that can cause lameness and arthritis. Feline HCM is the most common cause of heart disease in cats and is a progressive disorder that can result in heart failure and sudden death. Another genetic disorder sometimes seen in Maine Coons is spinal muscular atrophy, which causes muscle weakness and a shortened life span. Responsible breeders screen their breeding stock and kittens for these disorders.
