Machu Picchu is a World Heritage Site located in Peru. It is an ancient Incan city in ruins located on a high ridge surrounded on three sides by the Urubamba river approximately 2,000 feet below. The Incans built it over 500 years ago.
Machu Picchu can be visited by taking the Inca trail by foot or by taking a train from Cusco. The train trip takes a few hours, while the trail can be completed traditionally in two to four days. The trail cannot be traveled independently; visitors to Machu Picchu must sign up with an organized group. More than 75,000 people make the trip by foot each year.
