When was the Mackinac Bridge camera installed?

The camera system on the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan was installed in October 2012. The project was federally funded and is part of a $195,000 Department of Homeland Security grant. It is a particularly effective tool for law enforcement officers who are trained to use the system.
License plates are scanned as cars travel over the bridge. Police can use the technology to identify any that might be in the criminal database as well as any stolen cars and individuals that may be on a terrorist watch list. If plates are not in the database, they are discarded in less than a minute.
