Who is the man on the NBA logo?

The man on the NBA logo is Jerry West, a former All-Star guard of the Los Angeles Lakers. The logo was designed by Alan Siegel, founder of Siegel+Gale. Siegel based the logo on a photo of West that he found in the archives of "Sports Magazine."

In 1969, NBA commissioner J. Walter Kennedy wanted an easily marketable logo that could help solidify the NBA as the national league of basketball. He made the request to Alan Siegel, who found inspiration in Jerry West's old photo. His team used the photo to create a white silhouette surrounded by red and blue, with the letters "NBA" at the bottom. As of 2014, the NBA logo is still in use.
