How many of the Catholic saints were female?

As of 2015, over 600 female saints are recorded by religious organizations, but only a fraction are fully recognized by the Roman Catholic church. Papal canonization records only account for just over 900 saints total, so the exact number of female saints is highly debated among theologians and scholars.

Many female saints and their paths to canonization are well known, including those of Saint Brigid of Ireland, Saint Joan of Arc of France, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Mary the Blessed Virgin. Other saints, such as Saint Damhnade of Ireland, has little to no record about her life or her canonization, which makes calculating the total number of female saints difficult.
