How many pandas live in the wild today?

According to Smithsonian National Zoological Park, there are roughly 1,600 giant pandas and fewer than 10,000 red pandas remaining in the wild. There are an additional 300 giant pandas at breeding centers and zoos around the world.

Both panda species are listed as vulnerable, on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, due to habitat loss. Most giant pandas are found in the mountain ranges of Central China among the thick forests of bamboo and coniferous trees at elevations of 5,000 to 10,000 feet. Red pandas share part of this habitat with giants, and are also found in the foothills of the Himalayas.
