One hundred people serve in the Senate of the United States. Each of the 50 states is guaranteed two Senators. The District of Columbia does not have a U.S. Senator, nor do any of the U.S. territories.

The Vice President of the United States also serves as the President of the Senate. The Vice President is not considered a Senator, but he does vote in that body in the event of a tie. A Senator is elected to a term of six years. A Senator is eligible for election to an unlimited number of terms. The party with a majority of seats in the body is vested with the power to select the Senate Majority Leader.
