Wolves have 42 teeth. Their upper jaws have two canine teeth, six incisors, eight premolars and four molars. The wolf's lower jaw holds six incisors, two canine teeth, eight premolars and six molars.

The incisors are teeth that are used to cut, the canines are used to grab and hold, the premolars or carnassials slice and the molars crush.

The wolf's bite is far more powerful than a dog's. A gray wolf can deliver a crushing force of 1,500 pounds per square inch in its bite, which is sufficient to crush bone. A German shepherd's bite has a crushing pressure of about 750 pounds per square inch.
