An adult domesticated pig has 44 teeth. Newborn pigs have needle teeth which consist of a pair of incisors, and the canines. Piglets go on to develop 28 teeth until their adult teeth replace these.
A full set of deciduous teeth, or milk teeth, are complete and functional for the piglet by 3 months of age. Most piglets are weaned long before all of their teeth are in. A complete set of adult teeth is usually achieved by the age of 22 months. Adult teeth are similar in dental type to milk teeth, with the addition of four premolars to both jaws.
