According to Colorado State University, adult pigs typically have 44 teeth. This includes 12 incisors, four canines, 16 premolars and 12 molars, evenly divided between the upper and lower jaws. Pigs have all of their permanent teeth by 22 months of age.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Natioins indicates that piglets are usually born with eight small, sharp teeth. These are often removed through the process of "teeth clipping" to protect the mother and other members of the litter. If the teeth are too painful to the sow while the piglets feed, she stands up, which interrupts nursing. Bites can also become infected.
