The California state motto is "Eureka," which means "I found it." California's chosen motto refers to the discovery of gold in the state's early history. The motto also appears on the California State Seal.

Eureka is of Greek origins, and is said to have been shouted by the Greek mathematician Archimedes when he found a successful method for determining gold's purity. The California Gold Rush began in 1848 and substantially changed the demographics of the state. California's nickname is, appropriately, "The Golden State." California is bordered by the states of Oregon, Nevada and Arizona, and is also bordered by Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.
