While there is no recommended dietary allowance for biotin, an adequate dosage for adults 18 years of age and older is 30 micrograms daily. The appropriate dose is ultimately subject to the age, health and needs of the patient.
A component of enzymes that breaks down fats and carbohydrates, biotin is found in numerous foods in small amounts.
Though inconclusive, preliminary evidence suggests that biotin reduces hair loss when taken orally in combination with zinc and the topical application of a clobetasol propionate cream.
As with any supplement, patients are advised to follow product label instructions and consult a pharmacist or physician prior to use.
