The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an average annual salary for police officers and sheriff's patrol officers of $58,720 as of May 2013. The median income was $56,130 per year, with 10 percent making at or below $32,670. The top 10 percent made at or above $90,700 per year.
Police officers working in state law enforcement agencies averaged $63,100 per year. Local cops averaged $58,700. New Jersey was the highest-paying state for law enforcement officers at $88,220 per year. California was next at $86,040 annually. Alaska was the third-highest paying state at $73,990, followed by New York at $70,670.
