What is the name for a baby whale?

A baby whale is called a calf. Birth seasons and gestation periods vary among whale species. Most whale calf births are single, but twin births do happen occasionally.

Mother whales nurse their calves. Some calves nurse for just a few seconds at a time several times a day, while others nurse for long periods of time less often. Whale calves drink hundreds of gallons of milk a day during their first year of life. Different whale species mature at different rates; most baby whales stick close to their mothers for several years and continue to live in the pods they grew up in after maturity.
