Baby alligators are referred to as hatchlings. Hatchlings typically vary between a length of about 6 to 8 inches. They differ in appearance from older alligators by having black and yellow stripes.
Alligators can live in the wild for between 35 to 50 years. They are massive carnivorous reptiles, ranging in total length between approximately 10 to 15 feet, and weighing about half a ton. Alligators are found in the United States, primarily in the states of Florida and Louisiana, residing in wet environments, such as lakes, rivers and swamps. To stay safe from predators, alligators typically do not leave their mothers for about two years.
