Juan Vázquez de Coronado was a government administrator, which allowed his family to develop close ties with other powerful noble families, particularly the Mendoza family. This closeness later allowed Francisco Coronado to travel to the New World in the entourage of the viceroy of "New Spain." Because he was the second son, Coronado could not inherit his parents' estate or position; thus he was led to seek fame and gold in the New World.
