When do you need to adjust your freezer temperature?

Lower a freezer's thermostat when a thermometer indicates the freezer is above 0 degrees Fahrenheit or when food loses quality faster than usual. Freezers must stay at a minimum of 0 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain food safety, although lowering temperatures to -10 or -20 degrees Fahrenheit can extend food quality.

Even when the thermostat is set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the freezer may operate at a slightly higher temperature, so it is important to do a manual check of the temperature with a thermometer. When placing fresh food in the freezer, leave adequate space around the items so that air can circulate and properly freeze the packages.
