The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test measures cognitive abilities that translate to a student's academic success in school. By testing verbal, non-verbal and quantitative capabilities, the exam is designed to gauge student potential more accurately than traditional achievement testing.

The exam is administered at one of seven levels, based on the age of the student: A (pre-K and kindergarten), B (first grade), C (second grade), D (third grade), E (fourth to fifth grade), F (sixth to eighth grade) and G (ninth to 12th grade).

The OLSAT is commonly used to both monitor learning progress and as admissions criteria for gifted and accelerated learning programs.
