Two men helped Thomas Edison make the light bulb functional, Ludwig Boehm and Charles Batchelor. Boehm blew the glass used to make the light bulbs. Batchelor experimented to develop a long-lasting glowing filament for the bulb.
Batchelor tested many different types of materials to be used as the filament in a light bulb, including rubber and platinum. In 1879, Batchelor's testing paid off when it was discovered that using a carbonized cotton thread as the filament could allow the light bulb to burn for at least 13 hours. Batchelor eventually opted to replace the cotton thread filament with one made of Japanese bamboo.
