To grow zucchini, select a good location, prepare the soil, plant the seeds, mulch the seedlings, water the zucchini plants regularly and fertilize them. You need zucchini seeds, loamy soil, compost, mulch, water and fertilizer.
- Find a good location for the zucchini
Find a good location in which to plant the zucchini. The location must receive plenty of sunlight.
- Prepare the soil
Use loamy soil that is well-drained. Before planting the seeds, add compost to the soil. The soil is ready to plant when it has reached 60 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 2 inches.
- Plant the zucchini
Plant the zucchini seeds in a 1-inch-deep hole. Space the holes 2 to 3 feet apart.
- Mulch the plants
Once the plants begin to grow, add a layer of mulch around them. Zucchini plants have shallow roots, and the mulch protects them while keeping the soil moist.
- Water the plants
Water the zucchini regularly, especially when the fruit starts to grow. To determine whether the plants need water, place a finger in the soil, making sure that the first 4 inches are moist at all times.
- Fertilize the plants
Fertilize the plants when they first start to bloom. Once the fruit starts to grow, fertilize the plants more often.
