Who ran in the 1968 presidential election?

Candidates in the 1968 United States presidential election included Republican Richard Nixon, Democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey and independent candidate George Wallace. This election was notable partly because of the preceding year-long violence, including race riots and the assassinations of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The renewal of the war in Vietnam with the Tet Offensive damaged Democrats, whose supporters were pushing for an end to the conflict. Kennedy's assassination and the withdrawal of sitting President Lyndon B. Johnson from the race left the Democratic nomination open for Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. However, his association with the war in Vietnam likely damaged his chances as well, and Nixon defeated both Humphrey and Wallace in a tight race.
