Do Samoyed dogs shed?

Samoyeds shed year-round and have periods of heavy shedding once or twice a year as the undercoat sheds out. They need frequent grooming to prevent mats.

Samoyeds are medium-sized Spitz-type dogs originally bred by the Samoyed people of Siberia. The dogs were used for hunting, herding reindeer and pulling sleds. Their heavy double coats are an adaptation to cold northern climates, making the dogs vulnerable to heat stress in warm climates. Despite the shedding, some people with dog allergies can tolerate Samoyeds. The fur is said to be hypoallergenic and very warm when used for knitting, with a texture similar to angora. Samoyed fur is also used for tying fishing flies.
