What is the scientific name for a dolphin?

The dolphin is of the species Odontocete and family Delphinidae. Their species is the same as that of toothed whales. The orca whale is also a member of the dolphin family.

Dolphins live in coastal water. Unlike the porpoise, which has spade-shaped teeth, the dolphin has conical teeth. Dolphins eat fish and squid. The larger members of the dolphin family, such as the orca, also eat seals, otters and other whales. They are highly intelligent and use echolocation, a type of sonar to locate food. Their body temperature is roughly the same as that of a human. Their bodies are insulated by a layer of fat called blubber like that of the whale.
