Seahorses belong to a class of bony fish, Actinopterygii, which also includes tuna and salmon. Scientists have identified at least 47 different seahorse species, and more are likely to be added as research continues.
Seahorses also belong to the family Syngnathidae and the genus Hippocampus. They use the power of camouflage to protect themselves from predators.
These creatures have such a unique appearance because they include characteristics from several different animals. A seahorse has a head like a horse, a tail like a monkey and a pouch like a kangaroo. A seahorse also appears to wear a crown, which is actually a group of spines on the top of its head.
