What season is ideal for installing bluebird houses?

Bluebird houses should be installed in late winter or mid-February in southern regions of the country; in northern regions, they should be installed in March, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fishery suggests installing several boxes.

When installing a bluebird house, ensure the house is 15 to 20 feet high. Place the opening of the box away from the direction of the wind if possible. Pair bird houses one on top of the other. Birds such as tree swallows nest near bluebirds without scaring the bluebirds away. If several species of birds are in the area, such as finches and wrens, put up several bird houses to ensure the bluebird secures its own house.
